Teaching, Learning and Assessing Mathematics using Arithmetika at Daramalan College, ACT

Daramalan College in the ACT is engaged in significant experimentation in the use of computers to increase both teacher efficiency and student productivity in mathematics. In conjunction with Red-Back Spider Publishing Pty Ltd (RBSP), developers of Arithmetika and Cheetah, a fully operational multi-user installation has been established. RBSP is developing assessment material covering years 6 to 12 mathematics curricula. Teachers select sets of questions and assign them to classes of students. Students work on the sets of questions over a stipulated time frame. Each set looks different each time it is started, so students learn from mistakes and experience. They receive feedback in terms of correct answers, marks and links to context-sensitive help. Positive feedback is extensive. Students are clearly rapt with the opportunity to study at their own level, at their own rate of progress and with increasing confidence as their results improve. Teachers are impressed with the quality and rigour of the assessment material and by the extent that student interest is maintained over time. Arithmetika is for teachers and schools. There are extensive facilities for designing an printing or assigning sets of questions for worksheets, assignments and tests. Cheetah is for student use at home. It will deliver approximately 200 sets of questions for each year level. The poster session will showcase the products with reference to a set of case studies.
